Baa Atoll, where Landaa Giraavaru is situated, is renowned for its rich marine biodiversity and exceptional diving experiences. As a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, the atoll supports one of the largest groups of coral reefs in the Indian Ocean, home to approximately 250 species of corals and 1,200 reef-associated fish species.
One of the most unique diving experiences in Baa Atoll is at Hanifaru Bay, known for some of the largest gatherings of manta rays worldwide. During the southwest monsoon season, typically from June to November, plankton accumulates in the bay, attracting large numbers of manta rays and whale sharks. Divers and snorkelers have the extraordinary opportunity to observe these gentle giants feeding in their natural habitat.
