Why Go from PADI Divemaster to Instructor?
Many divers hesitate to go from PADI Divemaster to Instructor. It can feel like a big leap due to financial costs, limited time, or lack of confidence. However, with the right support, it is a realistic, affordable, and highly rewarding career move.
At Scuba Dive Online, we make the transition easier through our hybrid PADI IDC LIVE online option. This allows working Divemasters to complete the classroom section from home while continuing to earn a living. ”Earn while you learn”. Let us address six common objections and explain how to overcome them.
1. The IDC is too expensive
Cost is one of the most common concerns. However, it is possible to go from PADI Divemaster to Instructor without financial strain.
Our “Earn While You Learn” model allows you to work as a Divemaster during the day and complete the IDC LIVE online classroom in the evenings. This online training lasts seven days, with just three hours of live, online classroom workshops each day.
This is not an unpaid internship. You continue earning while training. After the online section, only eight days of in-water training and a two-day Instructor Examination (IE) remain.
This saves time and reduces travel costs, making it far more affordable to upgrade from PADI Divemaster to Instructor
2. I Do Not Have Enough Time
Time constraints are another major concern. A full 14-day IDC may seem impossible for those with full-time jobs or limited holiday leave.
Fortunately, our PADI IDC LIVE online format cuts classroom time in half. By completing the academic portion online, you only need 8 days in person, plus 2 days for the IE.
This hybrid approach is ideal for busy professionals. Many candidates complete the online classroom section from home, then travel for in-water training at one of our 12 stunning partner locations.
3. I Still Enjoy Diving
Some Divemasters worry that teaching will take the fun out of diving. In reality, the opposite is true.
Helping students overcome fear and achieve their first underwater breaths is deeply fulfilling. You will still dive often, and teaching does not replace exploration, it enhances it.
You will also teach continuing education courses like the PADI Advanced Open Water. These courses feel like guided fun dives, and you will still visit incredible dive sites daily.
4. Employment Opportunities Are Limited
This is a myth. In fact, PADI Instructors are in high demand globally. With over 6,600 PADI dive centres across 186 countries, jobs are everywhere.
The PADI Job Board consistently lists 475–500 opportunities. Most roles are for instructors, whether in guiding, teaching, equipment sales, or dive centre operations.
At Scuba Dive Online, we go further. Our experienced team runs “Employment in the Dive Industry” workshops and connects graduates with our global network. You will not be job-hunting alone.
5. My Skills Are Rusty
Many Divemasters have not practiced demonstration-quality skills in a while. That is completely normal.
To support this, our team offers refresher workshops before your in-water IDC begins. These sessions help you rebuild confidence and polish your demonstration skills.
We run these at no extra charge at our PADI 5 Star IDC and CDC partner centres. With extra time to practice, you will feel ready before the course even starts. To refresh your skills in advance you can watch our Scuba Dive Online YouTube video showing all 24 skills here.
6. I Do Not Feel Ready to Teach
Feeling nervous is normal, especially when taking the step from PADI Divemaster to Instructor. Teaching seems overwhelming at first, but our structure makes it easier.
The IDC LIVE online classroom breaks everything into manageable steps. You learn at your own pace and gain confidence with each day.
Our in-water section is guided by some of the world’s most experienced PADI Course Directors. Support is constant, from day one to your final exam.
After the IDC, we encourage team teaching to help new instructors build further experience before teaching solo. You will not be thrown in at the deep end.
