PADI Instructor
WHY BECOME A PADI INSTRUCTOR?
Do you remember the exhilaration you felt taking your first breaths underwater? Imagine passing that feeling on to others, doing something you love, diving. PADI Open Water Scuba Instructors are the most sought-after diving professionals in the world. As a PADI Instructor you will have your choice of 186 countries, and more than 6,600 dive centres. If you are a Divemaster, becoming a PADI Instructor is the next logical step.
The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC), along with your PADI Course Director, will teach you how to “Think like and instructor” from day one.
As a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor you will be able to teach:
- PADI Scuba Diver/Open Water Diver
- PADI Adventure Diver/Advanced Open Water Diver
- PADI Rescue Diver
- PADI Divemaster
- PADI Junior Divemaster
- PADI Advanced Snorkeler (Skin Diver)
- PADI Discover Scuba Diving
- PADI Seal Team and Bubblemaker
- PADI ReActivate and Discover Local Diving
- PADI Peak Performance Buoyancy

Your Scuba Dive Online PADI Course Director will take you through classroom workshops, either online or in-person which cover learning instruction and the PADI system. You will learn how to schedule and set up your own courses from beginner to divemaster, plan logistics, manage risk and make judgement calls. There will be daily confined water or open water presentations in which you will learn how to control and solve student problems, whilst fine tuning your own general diving skills and rescue skills to demonstration quality.
Dive Theory preparation
Complete the PADI IDC eLearning before attending the IDC. There are 16 eLearning sections to read, each having a knowledge review. The eLearning covers 16 subjects ranging from how to conduct and schedule all PADI courses, managing risk, classroom and in-water training, how to run a diving business, dive theory for professionals and more.
Each chapter is segmented with quizzes to check your understanding and concludes with a knowledge review.
In addition to the IDC eLearning, a great way to improve your dive theory knowledge is the Diving Knowledge Workbook. This interactive digital study tool has multiple choice questions on all 5 dive theory topics, along with detailed answers and where to find more information. You will find this in your PADI IDC crewpak.
If you have already chosen the destination of your IDC and when you would like to start, Scuba Dive Online will email you a schedule including links to our online virtual classrooms. We normally run two IDCs online per month, plus at least two Dive Theory online presentations per month to help you with your study.
You can join the online IDC sections, even if you have not yet decided where or when you will be taking the in-water part of your IDC. We understand it is difficult to commit to travel, and therefore will give you unlimited access to the IDC online until you are ready.
Your live online IDC:
The Scuba Dive Online IDC takes place over 8 days, 3 hours per day, with time slots to suit all regions. Day 8 is reserved for the EFR Instructor theory.
Each day one of the Scuba Dive Online Course Directors will hold workshops based on the eLearning you have already completed. The classes are interactive. You are encouraged to join in by sharing your stories and local knowledge specific to your region and eventually teach your own presentations and help each other with dive theory. These live sessions are fun and a great way to get to know your fellow candidates.
Daily assignments are to be completed for the following day’s session. Assignments include online practice exams through our state-of-the-art exam platform and preparing your own teaching presentations.
Day 8 of your IDC online is dedicated to the EFR Instructor theory. The hands-on skills and exam section of this course are completed the same time as the in-water section of the IDC.
The Dive Theory presentations are run over 3 consecutive days, around 1 ½ hours per day, with suitable time slots for your region. These are normally held a few days before your IDC online begins.
Finishing your in-water work:
The in-water section of your IDC will take place at your chosen location. There, you will practice confined water and open water presentations, skills circuits, rescue and deep scenarios, DSD in confined and open water and more.
If you would like to join the Scuba Dive Online team for this section, we are situated in Thailand on the beautiful islands of Koh Tao and Koh Phangan. Check out our destinations page for other affiliated locations around the world.
