Six Common Concerns

Many divers hesitate to go from Divemaster to PADI Instructor. Becoming a PADI Instructor feels like a big leap. However, with the right approach, it can be easy, affordable, and rewarding. One approach is to take advantage of the hybrid “PADI IDC LIVE online” option, making it possible to work while completing the classroom section of your IDC.

Let’s address six common objections and how to overcome them.

1. The PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) is Too Expensive

The cost of the course can be a concern. However, Scuba Dive Online offers an “Earn While You Learn” option. This allows working Divemasters to dive and earn during the day while completing the “PADI IDC LIVE online” classroom sessions in the evenings. The classroom section takes place over seven days, with three hours of face-to-face online workshops per day.

“Earn while you learn”, is not an unpaid internship. Unlike unpaid internships, this programme allows candidates to continue working and earning while completing their training.  Professional level divers should be paid for their expertise. Our option allows Divemasters to keep diving and earning whilst taking their IDC. After the online section, only eight days of in-water training and a two-day Instructor Exam (IE) are required. This saves time and money, making it much more affordable to go from divemaster to PADI instructor

2. I Don’t Have Enough Time

Time is a common concern, especially for those with full-time jobs. A full 14-day IDC can seem difficult to fit into a busy schedule. However, the PADI IDC LIVE Online option reduces in-person training time by almost half.

Completing the IDC LIVE online classroom section means only 8 days are needed for the in-water training plus 2 days for the IE. This is perfect for those with limited vacation time. Many candidates complete the classroom portion from their home country before travelling for the in-water section at one of our 12 paradise destinations worldwide.

3. I Still Enjoy Diving

Many Divemasters worry they will lose their passion for diving. However, teaching others can enhance your love for the underwater world. There is no better feeling than seeing a student’s excitement after their first dive. Helping someone overcome their fear is incredibly rewarding.

As an instructor, you still get to dive often. Moreover, teaching continuing education courses such as PADI Advanced Open Water, allows you to guide students on diving adventures. Watching their skills improve is as satisfying as guiding certified divers. Most instructors agree that teaching the PADI Advanced course feels just like fun diving.

4. Employment Opportunities

Some Divemasters worry about finding a job after becoming an instructor. However, PADI Instructors are the most sought-after dive professionals in the world. With over 6,600 PADI dive centers in 186 countries, job opportunities are abundant.

The PADI Job Board, available on the PADI Pro site, consistently lists around 475-500 jobs for dive guides, instructors, boat crew, shop staff, and more. Most of these positions are for PADI instructors. Many also find jobs through social media groups and professional networks.

The Scuba Dive Online team has over 80 years of combined teaching experience at PADI dive centres around the world. Our vast network of contacts and “Employment in the Dive Industry” workshop help new instructors secure jobs quickly.

5. I Haven’t Practiced My Skills in a Long Time

Some Divemasters worry their skills are rusty. This is a common concern, but it should not stop you. The Scuba Dive Online team ensures all candidates are prepared. We offer  skills workshops before the in-water IDC section.

At our PADI 5 Star IDC and CDC partner centres, candidates can practice their skills before the official IDC begins. This helps build confidence and ensures that skills are at demonstration quality. These workshops are included at no extra cost.

6. I’m Not Ready to Teach

Many Divemasters feel nervous about becoming instructors. Teaching can seem overwhelming at first. However, Scuba Dive Online’s unique flexible IDC structure breaks everything into manageable steps. The IDC LIVE online classroom sessions allow candidates to absorb information at their own pace. Plus, during the in-water section, our team of the most experienced PADI Course Directors in the world, provide support and guidance.

PADI Instructor training is designed to build confidence. By the time candidates complete the course, they feel fully prepared to teach. Plus, we encourage new PADI instructors to start by team teaching to gain extra experience. To go from divemaster to PADI Instructor is a smoother transition than most expect.

Becoming a PADI Instructor is a rewarding and achievable goal. Common concerns like time, cost, and confidence can be overcome. The “IDC LIVE online” hybrid  option makes it easier than ever. It allows Divemasters the flexibility to work while completing the classroom section. This saves both time and money.
